The Accidental Prime Minister Review: A Terribly Executed Political Drama Who Needs Some Depth In Writing

Accidental Prime Minister Shows A Steller Performances From Anupam Kher And Akshaye Khanna

Accidental Prime Minister is based on the life of India’s former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The film is adapted from Sanjaya Baru’s book ‘The Accidental Prime Minister’.

Direction: Vijay Ratnakar Gutte

Screenplay: Mayank Tewari

Cast : Anupam Kher, Akshaye Khanna, Suzzane Bernert, Aahana Kumar, Vijay Mathur

This is the story of PM Manmohan Singh’s journey from 2004-2014. He becomes the Prime Minister in 2004 and re-elected again in 2009. Anupam Kher is essaying the role of former PM.

Akshaye Khanna is the narrator of the film and playing the role of Sanjaya Baru who was the PMO adviser during Manmohan Singh’s term as Prime Minister.

The film is directed by debutant Gutte and he picked all the dark elements of Manmohan Singh’s term in 2004-2014. The film unfolds the inside story of UPA Government and how PM Manmohan Singh managed the coalition. The story tells us how India’s biggest economist failed as Prime Minister due to his ministers and the party.

The story throws the light about the nuclear deal. It raises the question on our foreign policies during UPA government. Vijay Gutte will make you think more about Manmohan Singh’s ability as an economist. The film is pro- Manmohan Singh and tells us that how an honest and wise Prime Minister couldn’t use his powers because the Congress President Sonia Gandhi controlled him.

Film elaborate the vision of PM Manmohan Singh for India and labelled him as the puppet Prime Minister. Manmohan Singh is the hero of Accidental Prime Minister who fought hard with the ideologies of Gandhi family. His unwillingness to quit as the prime minister after scams like 2G & Coal. In UPA-2, Rahul Gandhi was on the rise and Congress was facing so much hate but all the criticism faced by PM. Story summarise how Manmohan Singh could have taken strong decisions.

Anupam Kher delivers a strong and fabulous performance but I loved Akshaye Khanna as Sanjay Baru more. He is not just the narrator of the film but he is the one who guides the film. His dialogue delivery and the acting were outstanding.”Mahabharat mein do families thi. India mein toh ek hi hai (The Mahabharat had two families. India has only one),” the dialogue describes the narration of Sanjaya Baru.

Other supporting cast such As Aahana Kumar as Priyanka Gandhi, Suzanne Burnett as Sonia Gandhi and Arjun Mathur as Rahul Gandhi were impressive but had nothing to do in this film. Divya Seth Shah as the wife of Manmohan Singh was good.

Accidental Prime Minister is kind of political drama film and will tell you the inner side of UPA government. In terms of storytelling of Gupte in his debut film, I can say he needs an applaud to make this film but he fails to impress. Film disappoints with its execution.

Screenplay requires more depth and analysis on individual characters. Accidental Prime Minister is such film, you can watch only for Anupam Kher and Akshaye Khanna.
